  • MAC AND CHEESE
YOU THINK YOU KNOW MAC AND CHEESE NO YOU DO NOT WELL MAYBE YOU DO HERE IS HOW IT GOES DOWN

  • Why You Need to Vote on Stories
We look like them, but there's a difference... Kuro5hin.org looks like a lot of other weblogs you see in your everyday clicking. But there is one important difference in how we operate here, that you may not be familiar with, or even, at this point, aware of. You see, Rusty and the other editors do not pick what stories appear on the front page here. Really. Sure, they can, but in practice, they very rarely do. So how do stories get posted? You post them! Yes, really. The readers evaluate and decide which stories they think "fit" and which ones are just filler.

  • Russia did the right thing in Georgia
So the first analyses of the Russia-Georgia tussle over South Ossetia are being published. Don't be fooled by the Western - especially French and German - media consensus (for example, this article on the ever dumb Times screaming OMG Russian invasion!): this time the Guardian's view that this was a Georgian aggressive gamble is absolutely correct. According to almost all independent reporters, the operations were kickstarted by the Georgians launching a massive co-ordinated attack that started with artillery shelling and aerial bombing of the independentist militias positions around Tskhinvali at 1:50 of Friday morning, a few hours after cease-fire talks had broken down (see this excellent timeline of the events - in French). Before that there had been only a few weeks of minor border skirmishes. You don't start such an operation without weeks of planning, do you?

  • This god will not perish shamefully
It's late at night and the apartment is silent. Outside, a light rain falls, easily mistaken for fog. You set down your voice recorder, clicking it on, a slight raise of the left eyebrow the only sign of asking for permission. The interview starts.

  • The Spoils of... MUST?!
I had to run down a bottle of one step sanitizer for my pilsner I had fermented at 90F. Rather than let it go to waste, when I took the lid off the fermenter there were really neat apple, fruit, apricot notes. I decided that while it wasn't nearly on style, it would be interesting to drink. Then I realized I was out of sanitizer so off to the homebrew store. I decided to go to the crappy one. It's closer, but the guy is much more into winemaking than he is into beermaking. However, with the overlap of simple supplies like tools, buckets, and sterilizer, it made it a reasonable choice. But then my wife wanted to come.

  • Review: The Dark Knight
It is little wonder that The Dark Knight has done so well in modern America, generating huge returns for its investors, and spurring talk even before its release of potential Academy Awards. This is not because the 'dark' setting and overt themes of the film have any legitimate resonance with the zeitgeist. No, the film's subtext strikes a chord with the deep-seated convictions of the mainstream American public and with the interests of Hollywood investors. [SPOILERS AHEAD]

  • Immigration, health care, corporate malfeasance, and too many attorneys.
This story has got it all. The executive summary: An illegal alien is involved in an auto accident with a severe injury requiring over two years of hospitalization. After he has somewhat recovered, he is shipped back to Guatemala where he now languishes in a small village with no income or health care. Lawyers are now suing the hospital for $$$$. Read it - it's a fascinating story and fairly accurate.

  • FBI ends anthrax investigation after extremely suspicious suicide
The FBI is set to officially end its seven-year investigation into the 2001 anthrax attacks after a prime suspect apparently committed suicide. No, it wasn't Steven Hatfill, the FBI's number one patsy, but rather Bruce Ivins, a former government anthrax researcher. Ivins allegedly committed suicide after learning that the FBI were close to filing criminal charges. "Three sources familiar with the investigation said the case soon will be closed because a threat no longer exists." Yes, that's right, there's no need for further investigation, nothing to see here, let's all just move on now.

  • Kuro5hin's spamming shithead: newb4b0
Kuron newb4b0's latest diary is an open invitation for all other members to engage in a bit of troll-sodomy just for the kicks-da-shit fun which can be derived from sledge-hammering the ignoranus that passes for his brain. Have a Free-Troll-Fest on me. You want live-bait? Coming at you after the intro.

  • Trailer Trash Summer Reading: the best FP stories of 2007
OK I am bored this weekend and decided to update THE NOW FOREVER DEAD KO4TING WEBSITE. Weekends @ Kuro5hin are almost as dead as Ko4ting. If you are bored this weekend too and care to do some Summer reading, go through the following FP stories of 2007. I would post a poll but there were 45 FP stories in 2007 and the poll does not have that many choices to make. I will post in the ghetto the WINNARS after the story dumps (I would cancel at some point but you know how that goes).
